Sudden showers, roads covered in wet leaves or snow – conditions that usually make driving
diffi cult are easily overcome by Series Gran Turismo models with xDrive intelligent all-wheel
drive. This system combines the athletic handling of the  Series Gran Turismo with the benefi ts
of a lightning-fast all-wheel-drive system. The result: a noticeable increase in the vehicle’s already
impressive traction and road-holding capabilities, even in inclement weather or on challenging road
surfaces. BMW’s xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive constantly evaluates the vehicle’s electronic data,
such as wheel rotation speed, steering angle, yaw rate and engine torque, to determine whether
the vehicle is accurately reproducing the directions provided by the steering wheel, or whether it
is tending to oversteer or understeer. Based on this data, xDrive seamlessly divides drive power
between the front and rear axles. When cornering, if the front wheels slide towards the outside
of the bend – that is, if the vehicle threatens to understeer – the electronically controlled multi-
plate clutch transfers drive power from the front to the rear wheels in the blink of an eye, thus
preventing understeering before it even happens. You can enjoy the dynamic performance of
the BMW  Series Gran Turismo to the fullest, in any situation.
While you drive, xDrive is constantly assessing
data provided by the vehicle sensors, such as
wheel rotation speed, steering angle, yaw rate
and engine torque. So the system always
knows when to intervene and can instantly
adjust the distribution of drive power between
the front and rear axles to best suit the current
driving situation.

Driving Dynamics Control. Gives the
Series Gran Turismo a handling and per-
formance attitude adjustment at the push of
a button on the console. Choose from four
settings,
COMFORT, NORMAL, SPORT and
SPORT+, to adjust engine-throttle response,
transmission shift char acteristics and power-
steering assist. In addition, the traction control
feature can be disengaged when driving on
sand, gravel, or deep or packed snow.
When BMW engineers develop the suspension and steering systems of any new vehicle, they
pursue two seemingly contradictory goals: the driver must be able to feel a direct contact with
the road, while passengers are buffered from rough road surfaces. It’s this delicate balance
that produces the unparalleled BMW driving feel, and why we use proven design concepts,
such as rear-wheel drive and near-perfect  / weight distribution. The advanced suspension
technology in the  Series Gran Turismo adds to both its exceptional level of ride comfort and
its uniquely agile handling for a luxury vehicle. In front, multi-link, double-pivot spring-strut
technology reduces damaging longitudinal and lateral forces, while simultaneously increasing
contact with the road. The integral, multi-link self-leveling rear suspension uses air pressure to
maintain a comfortable ride whenever sensors recognize changes in vehicle load or ride height,
or if one of the rear tires suffers a loss of pressure.
Adaptive Drive. Adaptive Drive combines
performance-elevating Active Roll Stabilization
(ARS) and ride-enhancing Dynamic Damping
Control (DDC). The vehicle’s body tends to
roll in corners, affecting handling. ARS twists
special two-piece anti-roll bars to generate
stronger resistance to body roll, keeping the
vehicle more level and providing maximum
stability and agility. DDC, on the other hand,
instantly adjusts shock absorbers from the
softest to the  rmest settings. The result is
exceptional ride comfort and fl uid handling at
all times – during changes in vehicle speed,
load or road and driving conditions.
Integral Active Steering. With Integral
Active Steering, at speeds up to  mph,
a small turn of the steering wheel yields a
greater turn of the front wheels for more
direct response. It also steers the rear wheels
up to three degrees in the opposite direction,
giving the effect of a shortened wheelbase for
enhanced maneuverability. When changing
lanes at speeds over  mph, both front and
rear wheels turn in the same direction, giving
the feel of an extended wheelbase. While
you experience greater responsiveness and
directional stability, your passengers enjoy
greater ride comfort from reduced body roll.
